Important Information About Roadworthy Certificates
A Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) is a legal safety check required by VicRoads, it is not a full mechanical inspection. It confirms your vehicle meets Victoria’s minimum safety standards at the time of testing, covering components like brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and seatbelts.
Passing an RWC does not mean the vehicle is in perfect mechanical condition or free from faults. If you are buying a used vehicle, we strongly recommend combining your RWC with a pre-purchase inspection to get the complete picture, not just the legal minimum.
A certificate issued by an unlicensed tester is not legally valid. All roadworthy inspections arranged through Instant Auto Reach are carried out exclusively by VicRoads-licensed testers authorised to issue certificates in Victoria.
FAQ
What is a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC)?
A Roadworthy Certificate is a legal document issued by a VicRoads-licensed tester confirming that your vehicle meets Victoria’s minimum safety standards. It covers key components like brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and suspension, but it is not a full mechanical inspection.
When do I need a Roadworthy Certificate in Victoria?
You need an RWC when selling a registered vehicle in Victoria, transferring registration to a new owner, re-registering a vehicle that has been unregistered for more than three months, or when VicRoads requests one as part of a registration condition.
How much does a Roadworthy Certificate cost?
Our fixed price is $350, or $300 when combined with a pre-purchase inspection. There are no hidden fees, what you see is what you pay.
How long does it take to get an RWC?
Most roadworthy certificates are completed the same day or next day depending on your location and availability. Call us and we’ll give you an accurate timeframe upfront.
Do I need to bring my car somewhere or do you come to me?
We organise the roadworthy through our trusted Melbourne workshop network. Simply call us and we’ll coordinate everything, telling you exactly where to take the vehicle and when.
What does a Roadworthy Certificate actually check?
The inspection covers brakes, tyres and wheels, steering and suspension, lights and reflectors, windscreen and windows, seats and seatbelts, body and chassis condition, and engine and fuel system for obvious safety faults. It confirms the vehicle is safe to drive, not that it’s in perfect mechanical condition.
What's the difference between a Roadworthy Certificate and a pre-purchase inspection?
An RWC only checks that a vehicle meets Victoria’s minimum legal safety requirements. A pre-purchase inspection goes much deeper, covering engine health, transmission, electronics, accident history, and overall condition. If you’re buying a car, we recommend both.
What happens if my vehicle fails the roadworthy inspection?
If your vehicle doesn’t pass, we’ll explain exactly what needs to be fixed and help you get re-inspected as quickly as possible. A failed RWC doesn’t mean the end, most issues are straightforward repairs that can be completed quickly.
How long is a Roadworthy Certificate valid for?
In Victoria, an RWC is valid for 30 days from the date of issue, or until the vehicle travels 1,000 km, whichever comes first. It must be used within this period to transfer or re-register the vehicle.
Can I sell my car without a Roadworthy Certificate?
In Victoria, you cannot sell a registered vehicle without a valid RWC. You can sell an unregistered vehicle without one, but you must clearly disclose this to the buyer and the price should reflect the vehicle’s unregistered status.
Can I get an RWC and a pre-purchase inspection together?
Yes, and we recommend it if you’re buying a used vehicle. Combining both gives you the legal certificate plus a detailed mechanical report, and you save $50 with our combined pricing of $300 for the RWC.
